Recognising childhood cancer early
Early symptoms of childhood cancer and blood disorders can be subtle. Cancers detected early are easier to treat and far less likely to spread, so careful evaluation of every symptom is essential.
Watch for warning signs such as unusual bruising or easy bleeding, unexplained persistent fever, bone or joint pain (especially at night), a lump or mass, swollen lymph nodes, persistent headaches or vomiting, changes in vision or balance, and unexplained weight loss. Our Pediatric Bone Marrow & Stem Cell Transplant Center treats children aged 0 to 18 with both malignant and non-malignant conditions, from leukemia to thalassemia.
What to expect: conditioning chemotherapy over 7–10 days, about one month in protective isolation, bone marrow recovery in 2–3 weeks with full blood counts typically restored within 28 days, and 6–12 months of close follow-up with a personalised vaccination schedule after discharge.
Autologous transplants: using the child's own stem cells, collected via apheresis.
Allogeneic transplants: using cells from a matched sibling, family member, unrelated donor or cord blood.
Malignant conditions: leukemias, lymphomas (including Hodgkin), neuroblastoma, Ewing sarcoma, germ cell tumors and select brain tumors.
Non-malignant conditions: thalassemia major, sickle cell anemia, aplastic anemia, immunodeficiencies and metabolic disorders.
High success rates: pediatric hematologic cancers are treated successfully in 75–80% of cases, and severe combined immunodeficiency in approximately 90%.
