Early and precise diagnosis

Specialized imaging and pathology expertise for NET

Diagnosing neuroendocrine tumors requires dedicated methods — from functional imaging to the pathological grading that directly guides treatment:

  • Ga-68 DOTATATE PET/CT — the functional imaging standard for somatostatin receptor-positive NETs, with exceptional accuracy.

  • FDG PET/CT — for high-grade or dedifferentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas.

  • Biomarkers — Chromogranin A, NSE and hormone panels to detect and monitor tumor activity.

  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and biopsy — minimally invasive sampling for pancreatic and gastrointestinal NETs.

  • Advanced pathological grading (Ki-67) — G1/G2/G3 classification, which directly guides the treatment decision.

  • Multidisciplinary NET board — every case is reviewed before the plan is set.

Molecular imaging – Targeted therapy – Minimal side effects

Many neuroendocrine tumors express somatostatin receptors that can be both visualized and targeted with radiolabeled compounds. Our nuclear medicine department uses internationally standardized protocols and next-generation digital PET/CT with AI-integrated imaging.

Lutetium-177 DOTATATE PRRT delivers radiation directly into receptor-positive tumor cells — an effective option for advanced NETs that protects healthy tissue.

Personalized treatment options

The right treatment for the tumor's origin, grade and extent

The plan depends on the tumor's primary origin, its grade, hormone secretion and how far it has spread. At Anadolu we offer:

  • PRRT — Lutetium-177 DOTATATE: targeted radionuclide therapy for advanced, somatostatin receptor-positive NETs.

  • Surgical resection: for localized or resectable disease (gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and other sites).

  • Somatostatin analogues (SSA): octreotide / lanreotide for tumor and symptom control in functional NETs.

  • Targeted therapy and chemotherapy: everolimus, sunitinib, temozolomide for progressive or high-grade disease.

  • Liver-directed therapies: including transarterial embolization for liver metastases.

  • Hormone management: for carcinoid syndrome, insulinoma, gastrinoma and other hormonal syndromes.

Surgical treatment

Precision surgery with organ preservation

Precision surgery – Organ-preserving techniques – Experienced oncologic surgeons

For localized or resectable NETs, surgical removal remains the cornerstone of treatment. Our team specializes in the oncologic resection of NETs of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, appendix and other sites:

  • Pancreatic NETs: distal pancreatectomy (minimally invasive or open), enucleation or the Whipple procedure, depending on location and size.

  • Gastrointestinal NETs: small-bowel resection with mesenteric lymph node dissection for carcinoid tumors.

  • Appendiceal NETs: appendectomy or right hemicolectomy, depending on size and grade.

  • Liver debulking: reducing tumor burden for a better response to systemic or radionuclide therapies.

  • Minimally invasive approaches: laparoscopic and robotic techniques for faster recovery.

Radiation oncology

Precision radiotherapy as part of the NET board

Radiotherapy plays an important supporting role in NET management — for local control, palliation and the treatment of metastatic lesions:

  • SBRT/SABR: high, focused doses in a small number of sessions, for localized lesions or oligometastatic disease.

  • MR-Linac: real-time MRI-guided radiotherapy — ideal for abdominal and pelvic lesions near critical structures.

  • Palliative radiotherapy: relief of symptomatic bone metastases and locally advanced lesions.

What we treat

Types of neuroendocrine tumors we treat

Neuroendocrine tumors can develop in many parts of the body. Our team covers the entire spectrum:

  • Gastroenteropancreatic NETs (GEP-NET): small-bowel carcinoids, pancreatic NETs (insulinoma, gastrinoma, glucagonoma) and non-functional forms.

  • Lung NETs: typical and atypical carcinoids of the lung.

  • Poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NEC): large-cell and small-cell types.

  • Pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma: rare tumors of the adrenal gland and the sympathetic nervous system.

  • Merkel cell carcinoma: a rare but aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine tumor.

  • Functional NETs with hormonal syndromes: carcinoid syndrome, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, VIPoma.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about neuroendocrine tumors

Can’t find your answer? Talk directly to a patient coordinator — no obligation.

It is the most sensitive imaging technique for somatostatin receptor-positive NETs: it detects the primary tumor, affected lymph nodes and metastases in a single scan, and it establishes whether you are eligible for PRRT. It is superior to conventional CT or MRI for staging NETs.

PRRT (peptide receptor radionuclide therapy) delivers radiation directly into tumor cells that express somatostatin receptors. It is intended for advanced or metastatic receptor-positive NETs — eligibility is confirmed with a Ga-68 DOTATATE PET/CT and an evaluation by the NET board.

Many NETs grow slowly, but their behavior varies enormously depending on grade (Ki-67) and location. Correct classification and the decision of a dedicated NET board make the difference between simple monitoring, organ-preserving surgery or targeted therapies — that is why specialized expertise matters.

They are a very useful starting point. Our pathology team can re-evaluate your existing slides, perform Ki-67 grading, immunohistochemistry and additional molecular profiling, and DOTATATE imaging completes the staging if needed.

Nothing. You send your medical documents and the Theranostics & NET board responds free of charge within 48 hours with your treatment options and a transparent cost estimate. No obligation whatsoever.

Yes. Our international patient team speaks English, a medical interpreter accompanies you to consultations and investigations, and your English-speaking patient coordinator stays in constant contact with you and your family, including after you return home.
